Allatoona Pass State Historic Site Monument Project
On October 5, 1864, the Battle of Allatoona Pass, Georgia took place as a Confederate division under the command of General Samuel French attacked the Union garrison protecting the railroad cut known as Allatoona Pass. Although the Confederates made repeated attacks against the fortifications and nearly overtook the Star Fort, the Union troops under the command of General John M. Corse were able to halt the attackers, most notably with the use of the new Henry repeating rifles. Of the 5,301 men who fought at the battle, 1,603 were reported killed, wounded or missing, making it one of the highest casualty rates in the Civil War. Confederate graves can still be found behind the Mooney house, one of the historic homes adjacent to the battlefield.
In 2000, Gary Wehner of the Georgia Division Reenactors Association (GDRA) gained permission from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to establish a memorial site on the battlefield to be dedicated to the Union and Confederate troops that fought at the Battle of Allatoona Pass. A committee was established to oversee the work of getting people interested in the fund raising, design, construction, erection, and dedication of the first monument to be erected at the site. On October 14, 2001, the monument to the infantry troops from the State of Missouri was unveiled and dedicated. Since then, more individuals have stepped forward to work on getting additional monuments erected at the site. Seen in the photo to the left is the unveiling of the Texas Monument, which was the result of the work and financial efforts of two loyal Texans whose ancestors fought at Allatoona Pass.
The Georgia Division Reenactors Association, a non-profit organization, holds a living history and a memorial service each October at the battlefield site and is helping to raise funds for the erection of more monuments at the Allatoona Pass battlefield.
Needed now are individuals to chair a committee to take on the responsibility for a specific state. The original committee can share suggestions on how to raise money, monument design specifications, etc. In addition, donations from individuals or corporations who would like to honor the men who fought at the battle by helping with the cost of the monuments would be appreciated. No amount is too large or too small.
The remaining monuments still needed include ones for the following states:

Alabama
Illinois
Iowa
Louisiana
Michigan
Minnesota
North Carolina

If you are interested in chairing a committee, or if you or your company would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the general monument fund or towards a specific state and branch of service monument, then please contact the memorial site chairman:
