Rome and Northwest Georgia Memorial Day Parade

May 26, 2008 (Monday)

Presented by:

The Roman Legion, Ltd. and
The Memorial Day Observance Committee

In 2008, the Legions' Memorial Day Observance Committee will again put on the Memorial Day Parade along with historical displays and a Memorial Service at Myrtle Hill Cemetery.

Volunteers are desperately needed to fill the ranks and wear the authentic reproduction uniforms from the Revolutionary War up through the present. We also need volunteers to carry various banners and assist with the historical displays. We invite you and your group to sign up today.

The parade consists of Honor Guard Detachments from each war. Each group carries the flag/flags of that period.

This year individuals are being invited to march in memory of a friend, relative or the dead of a particular unit. Individuals may wear a period uniform or Sunday best and will be provided a black armband. Please keep in mind that this is not a Veterans Day Parade. Veterans are most welcome to march. However, all must remember that they are marching in memory of those who fell in war.

Units and groups are invited to march in memory of fallen service men and women. Units and groups are also invited to set up displays at Bridgepoint Plaza to tell the story of units and/or individuals from different periods that lost their lives in service to their country.

I would like to personally invite GDRA and other reenacting units to participate. You can march as Federal or Confederate. Units are also encouraged to display and carry other period correct flags. (For example: Polk or Hardee Corps or period correct State Flags.)

Tentative Schedule

  • 10:00 a.m. - Uniform/Equipment issue and briefing at the Rome City Auditorium.
  • 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. - Bridgepoint Plaza: Living History Demonstrations, Historical Static Displays, and Memorial Displays. Food Vendors will also be on site.
  • 12:00 Noon - Flag Lowering Ceremony on the front lawn of Rome City Hall & Auditorium.
  • 3:00 p.m. - National Moment of Silence Observance.
  • 3:05 p.m. - Parade begins at Citizen’s First Band on Broad Street. Parade will end at Historic Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
  • Memorial Service in cemetery will begin when the last parade unit arrives and is in place. The service will last approximately 30-45 minutes.

Have you seen this beard?

Chester Jackson with beard Chester Jackson sans beard

Yes, we now have photographic evidence that Chester Jackson has cleaned up on at least one occasion. For his upcoming scheduled surgery, Chester had to shave his beard off. After much fanfare and destroying only two chain saw blades and an ax, he finally got it all off. When he later examined it, he found two sandwiches, remains of a spaghetti dinner, apple pie from last year's GDRA cookout, two writing pens, Debbie's car keys, a family of field mice, and one very mad opossum.

The members of the GDRA were polled as to what to do with the beard. Here is just a sampling of some of the printable results:

  • Sell it to The Mattress Factory as stuffing for the entire next year
  • Use it as temporary housing for Katrina victims
  • Use it as artificial turf at Sanford Stadium
  • Grind it up and use it for asphalt
  • Use it for the new John Bell Hood statue in Chickamauga
  • Mold it into the shape of a cabin and burn it at the next Battle of Resaca reenactment
  • Drop it into the ocean as an artificial reef
  • Shoot it up into space with the remains of Scotty from Star Trek
  • Drop it into Lake Allatoona so that the water level will return to normal
  • Attach a mast and sail it to the Fiji Islands as the Kon-Tiki II
  • Use it for the new border fence between the U.S. and Mexico
  • Use it for armor plating on Humvees in Iraq
  • Burn it in the engines of Ford Explorers for better gas mileage
  • Prop it up between Alabama and Georgia as a Tornado buffer
Unfortunately, the whereabouts of his beard is currently unknown. It was last seen hitching a ride south on U.S. Highway 41. If you happen to see it, please do not approach it. Consider it armed and dangerous and contact the Gordon County Police Department.

Okay, we do wish Chester a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the field very soon. (At least Debbie does, anyway.)
